Olaf is an Associate Professor at the School for Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED) at the University of Waterloo. He holds the Export Development Canada Chair in Environmental Finance. His research and teaching interests are in the area of environmental and sustainable finance with a focus on sustainable credit risk management, socially responsible investment, social banking and the link between sustainability and financial performance of enterprises. He published a number of articles and books on the integration of sustainability issues into the banking business. Furthermore he is the co-editor of and contributing author of Social Banks and the Future of Sustainable Finance published at Routledge in 2011.

Before he came to the University of Waterloo he was a member of the board of directors of the Alternative Bank, a Swiss based social bank and president of the board of the Institute for Social Banking that offers the only Master’s programme in Social Banking worldwide. Furthermore he was managing partner of a consulting firm that is active in the field of sustainable finance and credit risk management.

At the University of Waterloo Olaf teaches courses in Environmental Finance and Environment and Business.
