It seems fall is the season for social finance. We at the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing would like to draw your attention to some fantastic events happening this month. We hope you will join us!

These words from Kevin Jones, co-founder and convener of SOCAP Markets, officially kicked off the content stream at SOCAP this past Tuesday morning. It certainly felt like a movement with significant moment at Fort Mason, where over 1,600 entrepreneurs, investors, intermediaries and other players in the impact space congregated for the largest SOCAP conference to date.
As part of a collaboration with CharityVillage for Social Finance Week, socialfinance.ca is featuring a series of case studies on non-profits and charities using social finance tools to increase
the effectiveness and resiliency of their organizations. The first article in the series profiled Vancouver-based social enterprise Embers Staffing Solutions; the second, the Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre. Today's post traces the development of Atira Property Management, a social enterprise created to support Atira Women's Resource Society.

This week, celebrating 100 years of global innovation, the Rockafeller Foundation held its second annual Innovation and Awards Ceremony. One of four award recipients was Sir Ronald Cohen, who is widely regarded as the father of social investment. B Corporations have been making a lot of noise in 2012. Today, Canadian enterprises shared the spotlight, as B Lab – the non-profit behind B Corps - announced the 39 Founding Canadian B Corporations (Press Release, PDF). The 2012 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting kicked off today with a markedly sombre tone. Economic imbalances and rising inequality threaten to reverse the gains of globalization, according to the WEF report Global Risks 2012, released earlier this month, while the past year's global economic turmoil, spiraling debt crisis and social upheaval are surely weighing heavily on the minds and agendas of global leaders gathering in Davos.
The theme for this year's meeting is, appropriately, "The Great Transformation: Shaping New Models." There is a recognition that our current system for economic and global governance is broken, and systemic change is required.
