Opened in late 2011, the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing (the Centre) is designed to increase the awareness and effectiveness of social finance by catalyzing new capital, talent and collaborative initiatives to deliver innovative solutions to Canada’s social and environmental challenges. Now that the Centre has been in operation for three months, we are keen to share with the community our goals and our progress to date.
Responsible Investment
Big Society Capital is a new social investment wholesaler in the UK that will invest £600m in social investment finance intermediaries (SIFIs) – organisations that provide finance and support to social sector organisations.
Upon the launch roughly three weeks ago, a video explaining the intended role and rationale for Big Society Capital was released. It features commentary from leading figures (such as Ronald Cohen, Chair) involved with this groundbreaking initiative, as well as social entrepreneurs, that 'will be a champion for social investment'.
Lisa Heydlauff tells stories to inspire the children of Indian slums and villages to believe in their own possibilities; Paul Cheng works to improve the financial efficiency of charities and social enterprises out of London; Keely Stevenson in San Francisco invests in women due to the multiplier effect they have in support of long-term economic growth; And in Zurich, social entrepreneur, Roman Gaus, is developing a cost-efficient, sustainable and process-controlled way to grow food and roll out urban farms worldwide.
