Video: Making Capital Count: Presentation on Community Investing by Jed Emerson

Jed Emerson is a leading voice on impact investing.  In this video, Jed explores how foundations and other investors can have greater impact with thier assets, including investing directly in the community.  His ideas sparked a lively discussion with the Hamilton Community Foundation.

As a family, foundation, or as an endowement, a key consideration is, what is the full legacy of your value? Jed takes a common sense approach to the value we create through our lives. It is not about the money, but about the value we create. We have a host of strategies that can employ our assets for long term value, thus engaging philanthropy to puruse blended value to its fullest.

Earlier this month, I participated in the Canadaian Responsible Investing confernece, where the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing organized an intensive session on Mission Related Investng for wealth advisors and members of foundation investment boards. Our panel included, Patrick Gleeson, CEO of Meyer Family Enterprises, who have made a commitment to invest 100% of the assests under management to impact investing. Patrick shared how the assets of Myer Family Enterprieses are invested and how they measure impact. His advisor, Paul Herman of HIP (Human Impact +Profit) Investor Inc. who wrote the book, How to be a HIP Investor provided the methodoly behind the investment strategies. They were joined by Christian Novak of tbc Capital and Brent Walker of WFT Innovations. Betsy Martin of Jackson/Martin moderated the discussion.

All to say that advisors and investors are catching on to the possibilities of Mission-Related-Investing and how to make it work within organizations.
