Workshop on Mission-Related and Impact Investing

PFC conferenceThere is a terrific workshop on mission and impact investing happening on Sunday, Oct. 2, between 1:00– 4:00 p.m. at the Toronto Downtown Marriott Eaton Centre.  It is part of the Philanthropic Foundations of Canada (PFC) national conference and the workshop is open to anyone interested in MRI, impact investing and social finance.

Brian Trelstad, Chief Investment Officer of the Acumen Fund, will give the keynote. As far as I know, this is the first time Brian has given an address in Toronto - and you’ll want to hear him if you can. Brian drives the investment of Acumen’s $40m social investment fund in innovative social enterprises in South Asia and East Africa delivering critical health, water, housing and energy services to the base of the pyramid. He also drives Acumen’s work measuring social and financial return.

This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the international leaders in the field and to hear the latest from Canadian leaders as well.  Bill Young will report on the Canadian Task Force on Social Finance as well as his ongoing work at Bealight Foundation and Social Capital Partners. Stephen Huddart from McConnell Foundation, Bruce Lourie from the Ivey Foundation and Julia Langer from Toronto Atmospheric Fund will discuss their foundations’ MRI work and Beth Coates will share experience from the Canadian Alternative Investment Cooperative’s long history in the space.

The workshop is jointly presented by PFC, Community Foundations of Canada and the Canadian Environmental Grantmakers Network.  A set of tools and resources will be distributed to participants, including key thought leader reports and papers, policy guidelines, resources for implementing an MRI strategy, resources for engaging asset managers, matrices of MR/I investment opportunities by theme and asset class in Canada, and lists of intermediaries and consultants.
