Enough Talk. Where’s the Action?

This series of blogs talks about social purchase as a way to bolster demand for the goods and services produced by social enterprises. The first two posts have described the concept and suggested two ways of encouraging its adoption, especially in the public sector.

The Caledon Institute recommended this approach to the City of Hamilton as one option in pursuing its goal of social inclusion, in respect of its role as co-host of the PanAm Games in 2015. Here are the recommendations on social purchase that we made to the City. They pertain to the Games specifically but clearly have broader application.

SocialFinance.ca is Recruiting: Two Volunteer Assistant Editors Required

SocialFinance.ca is looking for two qualified individuals to share responsibility for the position of Volunteer Assistant Editor from February to March 2012. The candidates should have strong written communication skills, an intuitive understanding of how to leverage social media, and an interest in the field of social finance.

The Volunteer Assistant Editors will be asked to commit to approximately 4-7 hours of work per week, performed remotely and on their own schedules. The successful candidates will share responsible for helping the Managing Editor source, edit, and distribute compelling content across SocialFinance.ca’s online presence.

Moving Beyond Financial to Positive Social Transactions

I still remember picking up that issue of National Geographic when I was younger – the one with the Afghan girl with the piercing green eyes. She literally opened my eyes to the world outside my knowledge. From that point onwards, I would try to find pictures that would correspond with both the happy and the tragic events of the day; I knew that the picture itself said much more about the event than the attached commentary ever could.

Survey on Financing Social Enterprises and Nonprofits

How are social enterprises and non-profits financed? How do impact investors perceive the risks and benefits of financing social enterprises and non-profits? Funded by Export Development Canada, the EDC Chair in Environmental Finance at the University of Waterloo is conducting a survey to answer these two important questions.
