This paper discusses findings from The Foundation Strategy Group’s field work performed for the Shell Foundation. FSG interviewed various organizations in order to determine how they manage their social investments and how they measure social and financial benefits. The topics covered in this paper include: reasons why organizations invest in Proactive Social Investments; the main metrics used to measure performance of their social investments; and the importance of measuring both social and financial performance in order to attract funds from other investors.
